High
and Low Cotherstone Moors, situated in one of the finest parts of the Pennines,
are renowned as premium Grouse moors. They are totally natural, with no man-made
roads or objects. Surrounded by the famous moors of Wemmergill, Holwick and
Bowes, Cotherstone extends to over 6,200 acres (2,504 Hectares) and was acquired
by Joe Hall in 1984. The Low Moor adjoins Cotherstone Village, some five miles
from the market town of Barnard Castle.

Over
the years, French partridge have been released on the edge of the Low Moor to
provide an exciting variation of Grouse and Partridge drives later in the
season, providing testing birds over ravines. Lunch on the Low Moor is taken in
the game larder adjoining the Underkeeper's house.
The
panoramic and unspoilt view from the High Moor over the Tees Valley is
spectacular, taking in the three reservoirs of Balderhead, Blackton and Hury,
where Rainbow Trout abound.

The High Moor, rising to 1,500 feet, is butted for
drives and is reached by Volvo Personnel Carrier and Argocat, crossing the south
side of Wemmergill and over the Balder Beck up to the lunch hut.

Numerous
improvements have been effected in recent years including ploughing and
reseeding, the complete rebuilding of all butts and the creation of new ones for
additional drives. Extensive tree planting has been undertaken to encourage
Black Game and the construction of a flight pond for Duck. A number of temporary
fenced trial plots have also been created for heather regeneration.
|
|
The most recent and obvious
improvement, which has dramatically improved the bags, has been the reduction in
sheep numbers in conjunction with English Nature, who now take an active role in
the long term recovery of heather at Cotherstone Moor.
Up to ten different species can
be shot and in addition to the single or double-driven days, a limited number of
walked-up days are available. |
